Nigerian govt suspends Channels TV for interviewing IPOB

Channels Television, a major media outlet in , has been suspended by the federal government.

A fine of N5 million was also declared by the authorities for breaking the broadcast code.

Acting Director-General, Armstrong Idachaba, protested in a letter to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) about the Channels 7pm live broadcast program on Sunday, April 25, 2021.

NBC told Channels TV’s Managing Director that the TV station made a mistake by allowing a representative of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to make secessionist and inciting statements without hesitation.

Despite being barred by a court of law, the news channel was accused by the regulator of allowing the guest speaker to make insulting, inaccurate, and misleading claims about the Nigerian army.
