Military reacts to Gov. Zulum’s accusations of extortion, others

Nigerian Defence Headquarters has responded to allegations leveled by the of , Prof. Babagana Umara against the Nigerian Army.
This paper has reported how the governor, on Monday, accused the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army, and other security agencies, along the - road of derelicting from their responsibility of protecting commuters, and resorted to extortion on checkpoints.
Zulum made the allegation after his trip to Jakana, less than 30 km from Maiduguri, following an attack by insurgents who abducted over 35 commuters on Friday.
‘Along this line, I couldn’t see between Auno and Jakana a single Army personnel neither a police personnel including our policemen that we established, the rapid response team are not in existence.
‘They are busy collecting money in checkpoints harassing commuters, harassing villagers,’ Zulum said in anger.
This is not the only time the governor is accusing the security agencies on the road, including the Nigerian Army, of extortion.
In January, the governor made similar allegation, with the Nigerian Army promising to set-up committee to investigate the allegation.
Responding to the recent allegation, the defence headquarters, in a release by Maj. Gen. John Enenche said ‘the attention of the Nigerian Military has been drawn to the media/air accusation by the Executive Governor of Borno State, that Nigerian Army personnel deployed at check points in Operation LAFIYA DOLE collects money from commuters.
‘While the Nigerian Military is in no way joining issues with the Governor, it is necessary to clarify this generalised statement against the troops who without hesitation lay down their lives for all Nigerians.
‘It is worthy of note that, the Armed Forces of have internal mechanisms to checkmate and sanction appropriately its erring personnel. Additionally, reported cases from the public in this regard are investigated and given the desired attention.
‘Thus, it will not be correct to rely on media or open air accusation to tag our gallant Nigerian Army personnel as extortioners at check points in Borno State. All personnel of the Armed Forces are patriotic and focused on their call of duty.
‘The High Command of the Nigerian Military hereby re-states the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other Security Agencies to tackling and ending the insurgency and terrorism in the North East.’
